I still think of Jeff Clement of a big prospect, even though that star faded long ago.
Clement was a First Round pick in 2005, 3rd overall, by Mariners. He was rated the teams #1 prospect in 2005, #2 in 2006 (IF Adam Jones was #1), and back to #1 in 2007. He was also one of the best prospects in the game, rating #33, #62 and #42 prospect in the game from 2005 to 2007. He showed plus power and good contact skills. His defense was not great, but with the offence he was projected to put up you could live with that.
But things never really panned out. The K’s really got him, injuries chipped away at his skills. He is actually still in the game, with the Twins, and hitting .219 with a .679 OPS.
It would be really nice to see him have a career comeback, but at 29 years old there is not much to indicate there is anything left in the tank–especially now that he is a first baseman. But I am rooting for him.
