From the Collection: Brett Bulter

I don’t think Butler gets the appreciation he deserves, especially from Cleveland fans. He was a really great player, and for a while in the late 80’s, and probably one of the best in the game.

Butler was drafted by the Braves in 1979, in the 23rd Round. He was traded in 1981 to the Indians with Brook Jacoby for Len Barker.

In his four seasons with the Tribe he was really pretty good: .768 OPS, .373 OBP, and a .288 AVG. Those numbers are pretty solid for an center fielder. And, considering he was playing on the mid-80’s Indians, which from what I understand was a totally soul sucking experince, those numbers look even better.  I still think he is one of the best CF the Indians have had, short of Lofton.

He really did not hit his stride until his early 30’s while with the Giants and Dodgers. He would never hit a ton of homers, but would improve his OBP–he walked 108 times to only 28 K’s in 1991!–and generally up his game a couple notches from what it was with the Tribe.
