New Arrival: David Murphy, of, Cleveland Indians

2013 Panini Hometown Heroes Signatures

The Indians signed David Murphy this off season. The only thought I had when it happened was “well…we are not going to get rid of Drew Stubbs, right? RIGHT?”. I really liked Stubbs, and we would in fact trade him a couple weeks later to the Rockies.

So now we have Murphy.

He was drafted in the 50th Round (1439th overall) of the 2000 draft by the Angels, did not sign, and then was drafted 17th overall in 2003 by the Red Sox.

In 2003 he was rated Bostons #3 prospect. Then #15, #12, #15 respectively from 2004-2006. He was traded to the Rangers in July 2007 for Eric Gagne, and would be rated Texas #22 prospect after the season.

He did not really stick on a major league roster until 2008, but since then he has been a consistent hitter. Since 2008 he has averaged 14 HR with a .272 AVG, .335 OPB and .771 OPS. His OPS+ of 103 and WAR of 1.7 shows that he is just a little bit better than average. He should do a fine job backing up Bourn and Brantley, while also starting plenty.

I was really happy to see that Panini put this card out in 2013…it is one of Murphy’s few on card autographs. Good timing.
