Bucky Brandon was signed by the Pirates as an amateur free agent in 1959. He would play in the majors from 1966 to 1973, playing for the Phillies, Red Sox, Pilots and Twins. He began his career as a starter, but would end as a pen arm. He would retire with a 28-37 record, 4.04 ERA, 1.408 WHIP over 590 innings.
I wrote to him because of his minor league career, notably his mid-60’s run while in the Houston system. His 1965 season was really impressive: 207 innings, 147 K’s and 209 hits for a 1.314 WHIP and 13-6 record.
While he might not have found a ton of success in the majors, he was a great innings eater in the minors. He would pitch 180+ innings five times in his career, and win at least 10 games in six seasons.
