From the Collection: Tim Belcher, p, 1987-2000

I did not know this, but Tim Belcher was once a #1 overall pick. Only not in the normal draft, but in the 1984 Secondary Draft that is held in January.  Of the guys taken in the first round, he is the only dude to accomplish anything; the next best player is RHP Shawn Hillegas and in 29 major league at-bats. The best overall position player from the draft came in the second round, when the Pirates drafted Jay Buhner. Other than that, the only other pick worth talking about–and 48 guys were drafted–was the Phillies with OF Michael Jackson.

Belcher has a long, solid career. He was able to win 15 games three times, and led the league in complete games in 1989 with 10. He was never be selected as an All-Star, though would rated in the Top 10 in Cy Young voting in 1989.  Also, he would be part of the 1988 Dodgers team that won the World Series…and that is better than any All-Star selection.

He would retire with a 146-140 record and 1.344 WHIP.

Belcher would retire in 2000 and join the Indians front office as a Special Assistant to Baseball Operations.  In 2009 he would become the teams pitching coach, though he would resign in 2011.  He stepped away from the position for family reasons, and is still active within the Cleveland organization as a special assistant.
