Yoenis Céspedes is my favorite position player on the A’s, and my favorite Cuban player in the game. In 2012, his rookie season, he carried a 139 OPS+ with 23 HR and a .861 OPS. He regressed in 2013 though, hitting 26 HR with a .737 OPS and 105 OPS+. And his defense was not really all that great either, despite some highlight plays.
Still, Cespedes was one of the better sources of power in a sometimes weak A’s line-up, and should be again this season. One reason to be optimistic is that he lost some weight this off season, and has been working to shorten his swing and improve his approach at the plate. If he can cut down on his strikeouts–a problem right now–he could put my MVP type numbers.
