From the Collection: Stanley Raymond “Bucky” Harris, 2B, Washington

I feel bad that I did not know who Harris was until I searched for him online.

Bucky Harris was a second baseman for the Senators and Tigers from 1919 to 1931. He was the player manager of the Senators and led them to their only World Series win in 1924. He also led the team back to the Series in 1925, but lost to the Pirates. He was a solid hitter, but defense was really his wheelhouse, and was consistently one of the best players with the glove in the mid 20’s.

He was a manager with the Senators, Tigers, Red Sox, Phillies and Yankees from 1924 to 1948, compiling a 2157-2218 record. He would lead the Yankees to a World Series win in 1947.

From 1938 to 1960 he was never able to get more than 11.5% of the HOF vote, but in 1975 he was selected by the Veteran Committee.

I hate to say this, but I kind of think he might not really be the type of dude who belongs in the hall of fame. He certainly does not have the stats as a player. As a manager he did win two World Championships, but other than that he has a career .493 record.

But hey. He made it, and good for him. He did have an interesting career, and did great in career overall.
