From the Collection: Kevin Hooper, if, Marlins

IMG_0005

Kevin Hooper was drafted in the 8th Round of the 1999 draft by the Florida Marlins.

I saw him play in AAA a lot, and I really thought that he was going to have a nice career in the majors as a utility player.  I was not the only one:  Baseball America rated him the Marlins #29 prospect in 2001 and #15 in 2002.  He was a classic, hard nosed player in the mold of David Eckstein.  He never really hit well enough to get an extended look in the majors, though he would get called up by Detroit in 2005 and 2006.

In 2008 Hooper signed on to the Independent League Wichita Wingnuts.  He would end up winning the leagues batting title and the teams MVP.  At the end of the season he was named the Wingnuts manager, a job that he still holds.

I am glad that he is still in the game.  I remember him being a really nice dude, so its good to see that he is still involved in baseball.
