New Arrival: Edwin Encarnation, if, Toronto Blue Jays

2013 Topps Tribute

When Encarnation was with the Reds he was kind of a train wreck. He had all the potential in the world, but for whatever reason he was inconsistent in the field and at the plate.  With Votto at first the Reds were stuck with a player that they were tired of waiting on, and didn’t have a position for, so he was traded to the Blue Jays.

He hit some bumps with the Blue Jays.  In 2010 they actually designated  him for assignment, so just about any team could have had him…and none bothered to claim him.  He spent some time in AAA, but was eventually recalled.  He was non-tendered that offseason, and the A’s claimed him.  They would never actually offer him a contract though, and he would become a free agent.

The Blue Jays originally non-tendered him since they did not want to go to arbitration–they though his uneven play and injury risk was not worth the likely salary bump he was going to get.  But as a Free Agent they were able to work out a cheap deal…and the rest is history.

Since 2012 he has been one of the best players in the game, and at 31 looks like he has a couple more good seasons in him.

I was able to get this card for something like $14 dollars…I think a good deal.  He does not have many nice certified autographs.
