From the Collection: Jose Ortiz, if, Oakland Athletics

resized_IMG_0001

Jose Ortiz was signed as an free agent by the Athletics in 1994.  In 2000 he had a fantastic season with AAA Sacramento, hitting 24 HR with a .408 OBP and the MVP award.  He would end the season the Athletics #1 prospect.

The A’s would trade Ortiz to the Rockies in 2001 for Jermaine Dye.  With the Rockies he would spend parts of two seasons with the big league club, but was never able to stick.  In 2003 Ortiz went to Japan, and has not been back since.

In Japan (and two seasons in Independent ball) he has had some awesome seasons, hitting with some serious power.

It has not really been the career of a former top prospect, but the dude has been around since 1996 and is still going strong–so that is something to be proud of.

I got this autograph from him in the spring of 2000.
