New Arrival: Doug Jones, rp, Cleveland Indians

Doug Jones is a player that I will always identify as a Cleveland Indian.

Jones was drafted out of Central Arizona College in the 3rd Round of the 1978 draft by the Brewers. He would stick with the organization until 1985, when he was granted free agency and signed by the Indians. Jones career at this point was not much to write home about: in the minors he showed promise as a starting pitcher, but struggled in the upper minors. After seven seasons of pro-ball he had only amassed 4 games in the majors.

But the Indians saw something in him. When he joined the Cleveland organization he was turned into a full time relief pitcher and found almost immediate success. He showed promise with the big league club in 1986 (18 IP, 1.333 WHIP), and in 11 games in 1987 he racked up 8 saves and a 1.333 WHIP in 19 innings. By 1988 he was the Tribes full time closer, saved 37 games and was selected to the All-Star team. With Jones, Greg Swindell, Tom Candiotti the Indians had some very talented pitchers that season…just not enough to have a winning record. He would leave the Tribe as a Free Agent in 1991 and sign with the Astros.

Over a 16 season career, Jones would be selected to 5 All-Star teams, save 303 games with a 1.243 WHIP and ERA+ of 129. He retired in 2000.
