From the Collection: Eddie Mathews, 1b/3b, Boston Braves

Eddie Mathews will always have a special place in my collection. When I was in grade school there was an article in Beckett magazine about which HOF players signed TTM. I had recently bought a pack of the Topps 1954 reprints and had gotten an Eddie Mathews card…and the article mentioned that he was one of the guys who signed. It would cost me $3. I asked my parents to write a check, and off it went. A week later the card came back to me, signed in black ballpoint (it looked terrible…but I did not care). It was very exciting.

Since then I try to grab any attractive and affordable Eddie Mathews cards that run across.  He is not cheap…and for good reason.  Mathews was a legendary slugger, amassing 512 HR (22nd all-time, tied with Ernie Banks), leading the league in walks three times, 12 All-Star Game selections, two NL Home Run Champ crowns, two World Series wins, finished second in MVP voting twice (getting beat by Roy Campanella in 1953, Ernie Banks in 1959) and a Hall of Fame member.
