Mike Papi was drafted in the supplemental 1st Round of the 2014 draft by Cleveland out of the University of Virginia. He is not a particularly great athlete, but he showed great plate disciple and power in high school and college. For a college 1st rounder though, he stuggled in his first taste of pro ball. Between short season and Low-A he only hit .181 with a .572 OPS and .301 OBP. He walked plenty–26 BB to 32 K in 135 at bats–but that was about it.
The tools are there, and I like to think that 2014 was just a little bump in the road. He should open the season in Low-A and I hoping he lights the place up. He should open the season in the middle of the Indians Top 30 prospect lists, and I think by 2015 he will either be at the top of the list…or off it.
