New Arrival: David Wright, 3b, New York Mets

2014 Gypsy Queen David Wright

There is only one thing that I like about the New York Mets, and its David Wright. When I first got into collecting he was a prospect in the low minors, and once of the first autograph requests that I ever got back in the mail.  I have grown up with him as a collector, so I can forgive him for playing in New York.

There is also that he is really good.  Really, really good.  In 11 seasons he has been selected to seven All-Star teams, received Top 10 MVP votes four times, and racked up two Gold Gloves and two Silver Sluggers. When compared though there age 31 season, Baseball Reference ranks Wright with Hall of Famers George Brett, Carl Yastrzemski and Dave Winfield, as well as Scott Rolen, Aramis Ramirez and Rafael Pameiro. Not bad company.

And it helps that he is loved in New York, both by the fans and the media. He is probably the greatest position player in Mets history–Mike Piazza might give him a run, but that is about it–and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. And he is loyal: he had been with the Mets his entire career, and it looks very much like he will retire with them. It is rare to see a player like Wright stay in one place so long.

I am not sure that he is going to hit any of the big career milestone numbers. He has 1,702 hits and 230 HR. You would like to see a dude get 3,000 hits or 500 HR, but considering Wright is 31 that might be a tall order. But you could argue that his above average defense makes up for those numbers.

I was very happy to add this card to my collection.  I like the Gypsy Queen autographs enough, but the relic autographs standout.  And considering it only cost me ~$20, I think its a good pickup of a great player.
