New Arrival: Sonny Gray, sp, Oakland Athletics

Topps Triple Threads Sonny Gray

I have not been impressed with a bunch of Topps on-card offerings over the past couple seasons…mostly since they keep putting out really dark cards, so not only are they condition sensitive but the autographs tend to get muted.  2014 Triple Threads is a little better; they are still condition sensitive, but the area where the players are suppose to sign are a lighter color so the autographs do pop nicely.  Really, the only thing about this card I would change are the dark colors…I wish it was more gold and green like the Josh Donaldson that I have from the set.

Despite all the trades that the A’s have made, I am still excited about the upcoming season. Every season I am fasinated with the Oakland rotation, and this year will be no different. With Gray and Kazmir they have a solid #1-#2 punch…but after that things get a little more questionable.  I think they will be in a really nice place once A.J. Griffin and Jarrod Parker return, but until then things are going be be fluid.

#3 Starter: Drew Pomeranz

As an ex-Indian, I am rooting for the dude. He has had an uneven career, but last year put together a very nice season–both out of the pen and as a starter.  I think he deserved to open the season as the #3 guy, and see how it plays out.

#4 Starter: Jesse Chavez

Chavez was the only Oakland player that I got back last season TTM…so I like the guy.  Like Pom he also bounced between the pen and rotation, and did well at each stop.

#5 Starter: Jesse Hahn

Next to Gray, Hahn is probably my favorite starter on the staff.  Only 24, he had a very nice rookie season with the Padres and looks to become a middle of the rotation type pitcher this season.  I am thinking he will settle into the #3-#4 spot by mid-season.
