Baseball Cards! 1996 Ultra #396 Tony Batista (Rookie Card)

resized_IMG_0009 resized_IMG_0002

I don’t remember much about this set…I do know that I opened a couple back in the late 90’s and the cards always stuck together. I am not sure why.  I do like the backs, though I am not sure the yellow text was a good choice.

Tony Batista was a good, though streaky, hitter in the late 90’s and early 00’s.  He struck out a ton and never carried a very good OBP, but the dude had power.  He hit 41 HR in 2000, and 31 in 2002.  He was an All-Star twice.  I liked him since he came up with the A’s right around the time that I got into the hobby, but then was nabbed from Oakland in the 1997 expansion draft by Arizona.  I forgot about him until 2002, when he hit 31 HR with Baltimore.  That is when I got this card…and i think I payed something stupid for it.  I want to say $8, but that can’t be right.  I hope.

This is one of a couple rookies that he has; others are 1996 Fleer Update New Horizons #3 and 1996 Flair #141.

He is one the shortlist of players whose autographs allude me every…single…season.  Also on that list is Tony Phillips, John Jaha, Geronimo Berroa and Brian Giles.  These guys are impossible for me to find…so if you have any leads on how to get them, please drop me a note!
