Andrew Helmstadter (sophomore) is one of the Crusaders top hitters early in the season. He is hitting .394 with a .462 OBP–rating second on the team in both of those categories. The fact that he hits this well while also manning the toughest position on the field–catcher–is pretty impressive.
His success this season is based on a pretty small sample size, but it should not be a surprise. In 2014 Helmstadter hit .287 with a .364 OBP in 115 at bats, and was an honorable mention on the 2014 GNAC All-Star Team.
I was very happy to get Helmstadter autograph, since I thought the game was going to get rained out. Tyler Davis and Josh Hatfield were the other two I was trying to get…and got all but Hatfield. The Crusaders have some great offensive players, and if their pitching comes together they could be a fun team in 2015.
