New Arrival: Nick Johnson, 1b, New York Yankees

Nick Johnson was a 3rd Round pick of the Yankees in 1996.  He would rank the organizations #1 prospect in 1998, ’99 and ’00.  He was #2 in 2001.

Johnson looked like he was going to be a perennial All-Star in the mold of Don Mattingly.  He did not have a ton of power, but more than enough pop to play a corner position and an insanely good ability to get on base.  He seemed like sure bet to be a regular player on a playoff team.

And he would have a nice 10 year career.  He would retired with a .399 OBP and .840 OPS, which is nothing to sneeze at.  Still, it seems like he could have done more.  I know that he battled weight and always seemed to have injury problems.

This autograph cost me all of $2.  I thought it was a good deal for a player like him.
