New Arrival: Matt Stairs, of/DH, 1992-2011

I feel like Matt Stairs is one of the more overlooked players of the 90’s.

I know him best from his days in Oakland.  The dude looks like a softball player, but hit like he owned a spot on a contending team.  From 1997 to 2000 with the A’s he carried a 125 OPS+, averaging 25 HR, a .362 OBP and .868 OPS.  The dude was dangerous.

He would go on to play for a couple more teams after leaving Oakland, and I am happy to report that he would win a World Series with the Phillies in 2008.  Plus we got this soundbite out of it, which I loved:

Matt Stairs is still in baseball, as a special instructor with the Phillies.  I am sure that he has a lot that he can teach, so they are lucky to have him in the organization.

I sent this Sweet Spot card this spring.  I was a little worried that he would not sign it (being a “blank item” and all that crap), so to play it safe I asked him to personalize.  I am very happy with this success.
