1999 UPPER DECK SP SIGNATURE EDITION Ray Durham

Ray Durham will always be an Oakland Athletic to me, though he only spent one season is the organization.

In 2002 the A’s traded for Durham, sending pitcher Jon Adkins to the White Sox. He gave the A’s a nice season, with a .350 OBP and 115 OPS+.

Durham would leave the organization that winter, but the A’s would gain two 1st Round Compensation Picks. With those picks they would choose 3B Brian Snyder (26th overall) and Omar Quintanilla (33rd).

But lets not stop there!

Brian Snyder was a great minor league player, but would be out of baseball by 2009 without ever making it to AAA.  Omar Quintanilla would be traded, along with OF Eric Byrnes, in 2005 to the Rockies for pitchers Joe Kennedy and Jay Witasick.  Both of those pitchers would be out of the organization by 2007 without any compensation.

So there you go.

Billy Beane had a very fine strategy, but in the end it really does not matter how good you plan is if you don’t draft well…and in this case the two picks for Durham were duds.

This autograph was from a small lot that I bought, and cost me $3.
