In the three years I have been collecting autographs at Hawaii games, rare has it been that a team comes through with so many players who autographs I was hoping to get. New Mexico is a fantastic team, projected to take first in the Mountain West, and Chris DeVito is one of the big reasons why.
In 2015 DeVito hit .314 with a .398 OBP, and showing some real pop with 6 homers (second on the team). Coming into 2016, Perfect Game rated him to the Preseason All-Conference Team (noting his “huge raw power”), and naming him one of the conferences Top 20 2016 draft prospects. And its easy to see why he is a pro prospect: good power at a premium position, and with six walks in his first 12 at-bats, he is showing off some impressive plate discipline.
He was one of the first autographs I got during the game on Friday, and it was a relief to see how friendly the entire team was before the game. Its been easy to root for these guys these weekend (even during the 16-0 drubbing they laid on Hawaii Sunday…DeVito went 1-4 with 2 walks).
