New Arrival: Graham Koonce, if, Oakland Athletics

So I always really liked Graham Koonce, but have always had a little trouble getting his autograph.  Finally this week I snagged one, and am thrilled.

He did not have a great career in the majors, totaling 8 at-bats in 2003 for the A’s.  But I really don’t care about that.  I like him for what he did in the minors, where he was one of the best minor league sluggers in the game.

My favorite season of his was 2003, when he hit .277/.403/.542 for AAA Sacramento, with 34 HR and 115 RBI.  Whats really cool is that he had this season after coming back to organized ball; he spent 1997 and 1998 playing in Independent Ball, and would come back in 1999 after signing as a minor league Free Agent with the Padres.

He would never really have a bad full season in the minors, and even when his average is low, his excellent walk rate would keep his OBP–and value–high.  Coupled with his plus-plus power, he was a fantastic slugger.  For a 60th round draft he should be really proud of the career that he had, even if he did not get much of a chance at the major league level.

He is currently a coach in Texas, and I am sure that he has plenty to pass on to younger players.
