2006 A&G

Dan Johnson was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 7th round of the 2001 amateur draft. Coming up through the A’s system he was a very well though of prospect. From 2003-2004 he would league the minor leagues in RBI, be the 2004 PCL MVP and rate one the the A’s Top 10 prospects. He was just an adequate defender and was slow as pondwater on the bases…but his bat was legit and would carry him to the big leagues.

He would make it to Oakland in 2005, and over 375 at bats would hit hit 15 HR and slash .275/.355/.451, good for a 113 OPS+. He was a solid major leaguer for three seasons, averaging .249/.344/.420, 14 HR with a 103 OPS+.

But in 2008 Dan Johnson was displaced at first by rookie Daric Barton. With his good bat and not so good defensive skills, DH would have been a natural landing spot…expect that the A’s already had Mike Sweeney and Jack Cust platooning there. Johnson was the odd man out, was placed on waivers, and picked up by Tampa Bay.

Johnson would probably be most famous for his time with the Rays…or really…one at bat with the Rays.

He was optioned to AAA after joining the organization, but was eventually called back up. In September the Rays were in a heated race with the Red Sox for the AL East Division lead. On 9 September Johnson was brought in to pinch hit in the 9th inning against the Red Sox, and would hit a home run that would tie the game. The Rays would go on to win, take the division lead, and not surrender it for the remainder of the season.

Johnson has bounced around a lot since then, and not found much success at the major league level.  Still, he hit well in AAA and has had his fair share of accolades:

This past March he resigned with the Rays, and is planning on becoming a knuckleball pitcher.  So that should be fun to watch. I am rooting for the dude.
