Tyler Naquin was the 15th overall pick of the Indians back in 2012. At the time he was considered the best pure hitter in the draft, and rated a plus defender due to his strong arm and speed. The big knock on him, and why he was not projected to go in the bottom half of the first round, was his lack of power. Most projected him as a tweener, who would most likely make the majors as a 4th OF.
From 2012 to 2015 he constantly ranked as one of the Indians Top 10 prospects. He had some injury issues that stalled him in 2014 and 2015, but they were fluke things that did not seem like they would be issues moving forward. As a minor leaguer he showed a little more power than he was projected to have, and got on base as advertised. Considering the issues the Indians have had in the OF, if it was not for Naquin’s injuries he would have been in the Majors by 2015.
Called up to the Tribe this spring, he has been pretty fantastic. He is hitting .333/.368/.868 and today hit his 3rd HR of the season. He is striking out a ton and not really walking…but I imagine that will come in time. As it is, its tough to argue with his production.
I added these two pieces to my collection over the past couple weeks…neither cost my more than $10.
