From the Field: Brian Mundell, if, Colorado Rockies

Brian Mundell is one of my favorite non-Indian players in the minors. I first noticed him when he came through Hawaii with Cal Poly–he was putting up awesome numbers and was already a legit draft product. He was a great college hitter:

He was drafted in the 7th round by the Rockies. His scouting report gave him plus bat speed, and he had good raw power, though it did not always translate into his game. He was a catcher/DH in college, and did have some injury issues, so where he would land on the field as a pro was in question.

He is a first baseman, and having a great season with Low-A Asheville. Right now he is hitting .351 with a .404 OBP. Not a ton of HR (4), but enough to keep pitchers honest. He looks like a good prospect, and if he hits with a little more power could move fast through the system.
