So when the baseball season started I sent out over two dozen autograph requests to some minor league players that I was digging on. A month passed, and I ended up getting maybe two back. It was depressing. Then, on day, I check the mail and there are like four requests back…I was thrilled.
Then I opened them.
One was just a empty envelope. Not sure what happened there.
One was my card, blank, with a note saying that he can’t sign “blank items”. The player was nice enough to send a signed copy of his Bowman card.
Another had an autograph! Except the player used a dead black sharpie. It was a smeared mess, and you could barely make out the autograph.
Then, the one I was excited about: Victor Robles! I has read about him over the winter, and was really excited to get his autograph. The envelope…just had my card in it. Unsigned. Nothing.
So, a couple things happend:
#1. I decided I am not wasting my time writing to any more players this year. TTM is a stupid hobby long ago ruined by collectors.
#2. I posted a note asking for help getting Robles…as soon as possible. i figure as good as he is, he’s being hit up pretty hard by (often greedy) autograph collectors, and in a matter of months he will be a tough autograph to get.
So I got some help. Guy actually graphs Robles home team of Hagerstown, so was able to get me this autograph in a week. He said that he had, in fact, gotten a little tougher.
About this same time I saw that Robles had his first decent on card autograph (well, that I could afford…his Bowman card is too expensive for me…), so I was able to get that card too…and pretty cheap.
Robles is having a great season, and cementing himself as one of the top 20 or so prospects in the game. Very happy to add these autographs to my collection.
