From the Field: Prospect Round-up

Tyler Eppler, sp, Pittsburgh Pirates – Drafted in the 6th round (191st overall) by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2014 out of Sam Houston State. The 23 year old is having a solid season in AA, with a 7-8 record and 3.95 ERA/1.25 WHIP in 120.2 innings. He has struck out 80, walked 25 and given up 126 hits.  He was selected to the EL 2016 mid-season All-Star team.

Nick Balog, dh, Evansville Otters – Signed as a non-drafted free agent with Baltimore in 2012, and would spend two seasons in the organization. He wrecked rookie ball, but did perform as well in Low-A. Since 2014 he has been playing Independent League ball.

Austin Gomber, lhp, St. Louis Cardinals – 4th round pick of the Cardinals in 2014 out of Florida Atlantic. Was awesome in 2015 (15-3, 2.67 with 140/34 K/BB in 135 innings, 97 hits), and rated one of the Cardinals Top 15 prospects coming into 2016.

This season is more of the same. In High-A he went 6-8 with a 2.93 ERA/1.07 WHIP, and then was bumped up to AA where in 13 innings he has only allowed 5 hits and struck out 8.
