From the Field: Hunter Pence, of, San Francisco Giants

Friend of mine got this when Hunter Pence was playing in Low-A ball with Lexington.

Pence was a 2nd round pick in the 2004 draft, which, for what it is worth, is my favorite draft of all time.  I was, for whatever reason, a big fan of the Rice rotation, and three would go in the first round: Phil Humber (3rd overall), Jeff Niemann (4th) and Wade Townsend (8th).  Other favorites of mine: P Thomas Diamond, P Jeremy Sowers, P Jered “Dream Weaver” Weaver, IF Josh Fields…man, I am looking at the list…I could go on. So many.  Whatever.

Hunter Pence. 2nd Round. Was a very good prospect coming up, ranking the Astros #10 prospect in 2004, #6 in 2005 and #1 in 2006. Made the majors in 2007, and was third in ROY voting, going .322/.360/.539.  He has not really stopped since then. He is a three time All-Star and four times he has gotten MVP votes–including three times in the Top 16. And, on top of all that, he has two World Series rings from playing with the Giants (2012, 2014).

Over 10 seasons he has a 29.7 WAR.

He is a great player and excellent use of a 2nd round pick.
