Ray Boone signed with the Indians in 1942 out of High School and was assigned to Wausau, Wisconsin, of the Class C Northern League.

World War Two was one, so he would miss the 1943-1945 seasons while serving in the Navy.

In 1946, back from the war, he was assigned to Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, of the Class A Eastern League.

By 1948 he was getting serious attention from the Major League coaching staff, and during that season would make his MLB debut.

Boone was a catcher for most of his minor league career, but in 1947 took some reps as a shortstop. When he made the majors in 1948, it was as a shortstop, and that the position he would play on the opening day roster of the 1949 season.

Boone would stick with the Indians until 1953, having some very nice seasons. As an Indian he would hit .259/.352/.368 with a 97 OPS+. He was traded to the Tigers in 1953, part of a package that netting the Indians four forgettable players (Owen Friend, Joe Ginsberg, Art Houtteman and Bill Wight).

With the Tigers Boone would bloom. He would get two all-star selections (1953, 1954), and Top 30 MVP votes in 1954 and 1955. Over six seasons he would hit .291/.372/.482 with a 130 OPS+. Very nice, especially for an infielder.

He would retire after the 1960 season.

Ray Boone died on October 17, 2004, at the age of 81.
