From the Field: Jose Valentin, if, Chicago White Sox

Jose Valentin was a great player, but I always forget that until I look at his stats. Its crazy to me that a infielder could have numbers like this and never get selected to an All-Star game. Then again, it was the 90’s and early 00’s.  It was a different game.

All told he had nine seasons of at least 15 HR, and in 2004 cracked 30. He has a couple 4 WAR seasons, and one 4.9, but would never quite crack 5.

Its interesting that his lone 30 HR season was in 2004, when he was 34, and just three seasons away from retirement. But it seems like he changed up his game, trying to be a power hitter. His average plummeted to a career low .216, with 139 K’s in 450 at bats.

He would retire with 249 HR, a .243 AVG and .769 OPS.

I got this during the Eastern League All-Star game, in which his son was playing.
