Shawn Armstrong has been a favorite my mine since 2012, when he went 1-0 with a 0.89 ERA in 20.1 IP with Akron.
Armstrong was an 18th round pick from the 2011 MLB June Amateur Draft from East Carolina University. He has developed into a great bullpen prospect, with a low-90’s fastball and plus slider.
In 2016 he had a fantastic AAA campaign. In 49 IP he allowed 27 hits, struck out 72 and walked 29. He got 9 saves. He even got a call to the big leagues, and got in 10.2 innings, striking out 7, walking 5 and allowing 9 hits.
I hope he works out. You can never have enough good pen arms…but sometimes you may not have space for all of them on the 25 man roster. The Indians seem like they are pretty deep in that respect, but I can see a world where he breaks camp with the big league club in 2017.
