Aaron Altherr was drafted in 2009, the in the 9th round by the Phillies out of Agua Fria HS (Avondale, AZ).
Seeing him make the majors is neat since he was considered a big project coming out of high school. He was born in Germany, and was a more accomplished in basketball than baseball. But he did play some baseball, and showed elite athleticism, and had a collection of tools that the Phillies felt confidant they could develop. He was a classic high risk, high reward prospect.
Altherr projected as a classic center fielder. Good defense. Good speed. Solid bat. Not a ton of power, but enough pop to keep pitchers honest.
From 2010 to 2014 ranked in the Phillies Top 30 prospects. The slowest part of his game to come along was his bat. He made the majors in 2014 due to his excellent defense, but was still not ready to be a starting outfielder.
Since 2014 he has been riding the bus from AAA to the majors. He was injured a good part of 2o16, but even when he was healthy was not too big of a threat with the bat. But the potential is there, and with his age and plus defense he should get plenty of more time to work on his game.
