New Arrival: Wil Myers, of, San Diego Padres

Wil Myers, 2015 Gypsy Queen

Wil Myers was a 3rd round pick of the Royals back in 2009.

He has had a funny career. He was a big prospect while moving up through the Royals organization, and was the teams #3 prospect after the 2011 season–and was one of the Top 30 prospects in all of baseball. But the Royals would trade him in December 2012 to the Rays in a massive six player trade that brought them Wade Davis and James Shields.

His debut 2013 season was fantastic, going .293/.354/.478 with 13 HR and took home the AL ROY award. It looked the the Rays had a special player for years to come.

2014 was not so good.  He went .222/.294/.320 with 6 HR. He went from a 131 OPS+ in 2013 to 77 OPS+ in 2014.  Injuries were partly to blame.

The Rays cut bait. In December 2014 he was involved in another huge trade–10 players and three teams–that sent him to the Padres.

He has a bounce back year in 2015, going .253/.336/.427 with 8 HR–good for a 112 OPS+.

But in 2016 he got his groove back. He would go .259/.336/.461 with a career high 28 HR and, surprisingly, 28 stolen bases.  Good for a 113 OPS+ and his first All-Star selection.

I think most of his success his 2016 was health. From 2013-2015 he never got in more than 88 games due to injury. In 2016 he was healthy for a full season and got 599 at bats–the most he had every gotten before was 325.

Good player.  Terrible autograph though.  I have to think one of the worst in the majors–which is impressive considering some of the terrible signatures guys have.
