From the Field: Austin Smith, sp, San Diego Padres

Austin Smith was drafted in the 2nd round of the 2015 draft by the Padres, out of Park Vista Community HS, Lake Worth, Florida.

Smith has three pitches: mid-90’s fastball, curve and change-up.

He has had a rough time of it in his pro career. In 2016, with Low-A Fort Wayne, he went 4-6 with a 5.26 ERA. He allowed 104 hits in 90.2 innings, and struck out 63 while walking 46. Good for a 1.65 WHIP. Not great numbers.

That said, he is young at only 19. I think that he still has plenty of time to put it all together.
