Fernando Rodney signed custom index card in blue sharpie

Rodney was signed by the Detroit Tigers as an amateur free agent in 1997.

He was a well though of prospect while he was coming up through the Tigers systems, and was groomed since almost the start to be a power reliever. It says something that when it was discovered that he was born in 1977 and not 1981 it only wobbled his prospect status. He may be a couple years older than expected, but his high 90’s fastball was legit and the Tigers thought it would get major league hitters out.

He made the majors in 2002, but didn’t really establish himself until 2005. Since then he has had a heck of a career: 261 career saves (leading the league once, with 48 in 2014), three all-star selections, and both the 2012 AL Comeback Player of the Year and Delivery Man of the Year award winner.

At 39 he was pretty awesome for most of 2016. With the Padres he saw 28.2 innings, and racked up 17 saves with a 0.31 ERA. He was traded to the Marlins, where he tacked on 8 more saves–though with a 5.89 ERA.

I think he still has a season or two left in him. He was just too good with the Padres to hang it up yet.
