From the Field: Victor Martinez, dh, Detroit Tigers

It really sucks that Martinez went to play for the Tigers, considering what a pain they have been to the Indians (well…not in 2016…). But he is a very nice guy, and one of the dudes that you kind of have to root for no matter what.

Martinez was a five time all-star and two time silver slugger award winner. His mix of power and OBP–all from the catchers position–made him a valuable player. Along with Travis Hafner and Grady Sizemore he made Cleveland a team that was not fun to play in the mid-90’s.

His last great season–and maybe the best of his career–was in 2014. He went .335/.409/.565 with 32 HR, good for a 172 OPS+. He is going to be 38 coming into 2017, so the chances of him capturing those numbers again will be tough. Still, great player.
