Jeff Johnson was selected by Indians in 10th round of 2011 draft out of Cal Poly.
Over five seasons in the minors (210 innings) he has went 9-9 with 154 hits, 237 K’s and 78 walks. Good for a 2.57 ERA/1.10 WHIP. He has been nothing short of fantastic.
This season he spent the entire year in AAA, and went 4-1 with a 2.77 ERA/1.25 WHIP over 52 innings, striking out 56.
Johnson clearly has nothing left to prove in the minors, and assuming that he does not get sucked up in the Rule 5 draft, he should be fighting for a pen spot with the big league club come February.
That said, if I was a major league team with a spot on the roster to burn, I would totally snatch him up in the Rule 5. I could see him sticking in the majors for the whole season, especially since he is so effective against RHB (.165 BA, vs. .278 to lefties).
