New Arrival: Tom Gorzelanny, p, Cleveland Indians

Tom Gorzelanny signed custom scorecard – acquired while he was playing for Cleveland Indians AAA club in Columbus.

Back in 2005 I remember really digging the Pirates collection of minor league starting pitchers prospects. LHP Zach Duke (#1 in the system per Baseball America), RHP John Van Benschoten (#3), RHP Ian Snell (#4), LHP Gorzelanny (#5), RHP Bryan Bullington (#6), and LHP Paul Maholm (#7) all seemed like good prospects.  I thought the Pirates were going to have a heck of a pitching staff someday.

But baseball is a funny sport. Only Duke, Snell, Gorzelanny and Maholm had any success in the majors, but none were ever much more than league average. Duke is still pitching effectively in the majors, though out of the pen.

Tom Gorzelanny had one really good season in the majors, going 14-10 with a 3.88 ERA for the Pirates back in 2007.

Since then he has bounced around, mostly filling the 5th starter, long man role. And with some success, especially with the Nationals in 2011-2012, and Brewers in 2013.

But he has struggled with the Tigers (2015) and Indians (2016), and is currently a free agent. He is only 34, so I would imagine he will sign a minor league deal with someone and get an invitation to the big league spring training in 2017.
