Selected by Indians in 14th round of 2015 draft out of UC Irvine.

Matt Esparza was a polished college pitcher, armed with a solid fastball (88-93), plus hard splitter/slider, and decent breaking ball (upper-70s curve).

In his two seasons as a pro he has looked fantastic. This season he started off in Low-A Lake County, and over 100.1 innings he went 8-6 with a 3.14 ERA/1.027 WHIP, striking out 109 and only allowing 81 hits. He got bumped to High-A, and over 39 innings he went 2-4 with a 3.92 ERA/1.359 WHIP with 32 K and 39 hits. He ended the season with the organizational lead in K’s, with 141.

He was selected an organizational all-star by Milb.com.

His numbers in High-A were not as impressive as in Low-A, but the hitters are tougher and it was his first crack at that level. He will start there in 2017.
