Shelby Ford 2006 Crosscutters MiLB card, acquired TTM in 2007
Shelby Ford was selected by Pirates in third round of 2006 draft out of Oklahoma State.
He projected to be a middle infielder with a good bat and solid glove. He didn’t have a tool that stood out, and profiled best as a offensively minded utility player in the majors.
From 2006-2008 he ranked in the Pirates top 25 prospects, topping out as their #8 prospect after the 2008 season. He wrestled with injuries, and was still uneven in the field, but it looked like he was destined to be the Pirates second baseman at some point in 2009.
But things did not work out. He struggled in AAA, and was demoted. Injuries played no small role, and he was never able to get his bat back on track. He struggled through to 2010 season in High-A and AA, and though he finally made it back to AAA in 2011, he was not the same player he once was.
From 2012-2015 Ford played Indy ball, and hit well enough, but at this point he was in his late 20’s and the game had passed him by.
I liked him as a prospect, and I remember being bummed when he hit the wall in AAA.
