Back in 2005 I got an itch to try writing to guys in the Cape Cod league. I researched the players, picked about a dozen, and sent letters. I got zero returns. I only remember one of the players that I chose: Emmanuel Burriss. I have no idea why he is the one that my brain kept. I think it might be because he played at Kent State, which is near my hometown.
Burriss would end up getting taken in the first round, 33rd overall, of the 2006 draft by the Giants. He was not projected to have much pop with the bat, but contact skills, speed and middle of the infield defense should of made him a valuable National League asset. The Giants were high on him, to the point that one team official compared his playmaking abilities to Willie Mays. He would rate in the Giants Top 10 twice, #4 in 2006 and #10 in 2007.
He would scuff a little in his first taste with High-A ball, but would generally move quickly through the system and made the majors in 2008.
But since then he has been a 4A player, riding the bus back and fourth from the major leagues. Last season he didn’t hit particularly well in either AAA or the majors, and at this point is the owner of a career -2.7 WAR.
He is still quick, and his defense is good, but his bat is just not playing well…even in the National League.
