From the Field: Austin Jackson, of, Cleveland Indians

I like Austin Jackson since he is a Hawaiian Winter League alumni, part of the 2007 Honolulu team that played right down the street from my house.

That winter he hit .271/.368/.489 with 3 HR. At the time he was considered one of the Yankees Top 5 prospects, and certainly performed like it.

Jackson made the big leagues in 2010, and has been a solid major league player. His best season was in 2012 with the Tigers, hitting .300/.377/.479 with 16 HR and 22 SB, good for a 129 OPS+ and 5.4 WAR.

Jackson lost his 2016 to a knee injury, was granted free agency in the off-season, and signed a minor league deal with the Tribe.

He was still recovering from knee surgery at the start of the Spring, but a couple weeks ago was activated and has been hitting the ball really well. As of this writing he is hitting .333 (6-for-18) with a homer and five RBI in Cactus League action. Also, reports are that he defense is holding well, which was clearly a concern for a player coming off knee surgery.

I don’t see any reason why he should not break camp with the Indians as a 4th OF type, with more than enough potential to be starting at some point.

Very happy to get this card signed this spring via a friend of mine who is autographing the Indians this spring.
